Bridging the Gap Between Ideas, IP Assets, and Commercialization
An innovative energy startup (converting spent nuclear fuel into clean and low-Carbon Hydrogen) was in the phase of developing its core intellectual property and next steps to commercialize its technology. While the technology is quite promising, the founding team knew the knows and the unknowns. They appreciated the complexities of commercialization in this deep tech space and realized they needed a refined commercialization strategy aligned to their invention, team, business, and technology contexts. They were referred to TIV by one of our SBA FAST partners.
While the technology is quite promising, the founding team knew the knows and the unknowns. They appreciated the complexities of commercialization in this deep tech space and realized they needed a refined commercialization strategy aligned to their invention, team, business and technology contexts. They were referred to TIV by one of our SBA FAST partners.
TIV guided the team to discuss its framework for transitioning from invention to asset. TIV provided a commercial perspective often missing in early-stage teams. Here the startup team has great leadership comprising business, technical, and legal acumen unique in its own rights and tailored to the problem the company is solving.
TIV IP experts focused on the business implications of the imminent provisional patent application filing(s), international filings, and commercialization strategy. We helped the team orient themselves in preparation for imminent discussions with its preferred commercialization partner - a major federal lab. We discussed myriad dynamics with the team and also discussed a few sensitivities for the purpose of risking off potential barriers to commercialization and helped refine the roadmap.
Based on TIV’s guidance the startup successfully navigated their provisional patent filing strategy with clarity. Rather than simply checking a box, they are rigorously developing an IP portfolio strategically designed to support long-term commercial growth and investment in the company, while leveraging its proprietary technology and inventions to create IP assets with demonstrable and defensible business cases and valuations.
