Biography

Dr. James Gillespie is a distinguished consultant, researcher, and executive with over two decades of experience advancing healthcare strategy, biopharmaceutical innovation, and the use of advanced analytics to drive value across the health ecosystem. He is Co-Founder and President of the Center for Healthcare Innovation (CHI), a leading U.S. research and policy institute, and serves as Senior Advisor and Project Director at Stanford University School of Medicine’s Clinical Excellence Research Center, where he co-developed the Master of Science in Clinical Informatics Management program. He is also a Research Affiliate at Yale University’s Center for Digital Health Innovation.


Dr. Gillespie has advised Fortune 500 companies, hospital systems, investor groups, and government agencies on innovation, commercialization, and strategy in the healthcare and life sciences sectors. His consulting clients include Blue Cross Blue Shield, HIMSS, Walgreens, Merck, and Baxter, among others. He has also held senior advisory roles with the American Medical Association, the National Institutes of Health, and leading nonprofit organizations focused on transforming health systems. Beyond the boardroom, he has served on multiple boards and national advisory councils, contributing his expertise on the intersection of healthcare, technology, and policy.


His academic and research contributions are equally extensive. Dr. Gillespie’s work has been published in leading journals, including the Academy of Management Review, Strategic Management Journal, Harvard Business Review, American Behavioral Scientist, and European Journal of Social Psychology. He is the lead author of Patient-Centric Analytics in Health Care: Driving Value in Clinical Settings and Psychological Practice (Lexington Books) and has additional works forthcoming with Cambridge University Press. He has presented at international conferences, medical schools, and policy forums on healthcare analytics, innovation, and organizational strategy.


Dr. Gillespie holds advanced degrees from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management (Ph.D., M.A.), Harvard Law School (J.D.), and Princeton University’s School of Public and International Affairs (M.P.A.), in addition to a B.S. from MIT. He has also pursued graduate studies at Carnegie Mellon and the RAND Graduate School.
